어제 룰루랄라 삼청동에 갔다. 가회동 한옥마을 먼저 들러서 고관대작 님하들의 성채와 같은 저택들도 감상하고. '이준구 가옥'이라고 있던데, 순간 서울대 이준구 교수의 집인줄 알았다. 거대한 담이 둘러싸고 있었고 까치발로 조금 들여다보니 수영장도 있었다. 이준구가 누구길래? 아마도 친일파가 아니었을까.
오늘 보여지는 문장은 <동물농장>의 저 유명한 구절, "모든 동물은 평등하다. 그러나 어떤 동물은 다른 동물들보다 더 평등하다.(All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.)"이다.
어제는 <1984>의 첫 문장이 보여졌다. "4월의 어느 날, 날씨는 맑고 쌀쌀했다. 괘종시계가 13시를 치고 있었다.(It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.)"

... 티베트 사태는 연간 10만건 이상으로 추산되는 일반적인 중국의 군중시위와 달리 중국정부가 결코 양보할 수 없는 영토와 주권의 문제를 직접적으로 겨냥하고 있다.
... 달라이 라마도 지난해 미국을 방문한 자리에서 "2008년이 관건이 될 것이다. 올림픽은 티베트인들의 마지막 기회가 될 것"이라고 언급한 바 있었다.
... 중국정부는 민족구역자치론과 다민족 통일국가론에 입각해 제한적인 자치권을 부여하면서도 중국에 동화시키는 정책을 지속적으로 추진해왔다. 무엇보다 티베트사회를 '외곽을 때리는 노련한 방법'으로 세속화시키고자 했다. 한족을 이 지역에 이주시켜 티베트인과 어울려 살게 하는 잡거(雜居)정책을 추진했으며，지역경제 개발과 자원 개발을 위해 막대한 국가재정을 투자했다. 2006년 베이징에서 라싸까지 가는 열차의 개통은 티베트를 중국으로 한 걸음 더 끌어들이는 상징적인 사건이었다.
그러나 이러한 정책의 결과 불과 티베트인구의 3.3%를 차지하는 한족이 티베트의 모든 상권을 장악했고 티베트주민들은 이등시민으로 밀려나게 됐다. 이처럼 티베트인의 분리독립을 향한 열망에는 한족 지배질서에 대한 불만이나 종교세속화에 대한 반발도 깊게 침투돼 있는 것이었다.
문제는 티베트 사태에 대한 평화적 해결전망이 어둡다는 점이다. 중국은 국제사회의 부정적 여론에도 불구하고 분리독립의 도미노현상을 막고 '안정이 모든 것을 압도한다'는 원칙을 반복하고 있다.
... 중국은 티베트문제를 문명공존의 관점에서 차이를 인정하고 공통점을 찾아가는 구동존이(求同存異)의 자세를 다시 한번 발휘할 필요가 있다. 이것은 새롭게 떠오르는 제국의 품위와 관련된 문제이자 이웃 국가들이 중국을 바라보는 우려이기도 한 것이다.
3월 17일은 아일랜드 최고의 명절인 세인트 패트릭스 데이(성 패트릭의 날, Saint Patrick's Day). 올해는 월요일인 관계로 이틀 당겨, 오늘(3월 15일 토요일) 청계천에서 기념 행사가 있었다. 개인적으로는 처음 참여해보는 세인트 패트릭스 데이. 조금 설레였고, 많이 즐거웠다.

전형적인 킬링타임 무비. <사선에서>의 컨셉과 <에어포스원>의 황당함과 <본 얼터메이텀>의 추격신과 <플라이트 93>의 테러범과 <라쇼몽>('씨네21'에 따르면 <24>에 더 가깝다고 한다)의 플롯이 짬뽕되었으나 아무런 감흥을 주지 못한다. 대여섯번의 리와인드 끝에 남은 거라고는 포레스트 휘태커(Forest Whitaker)가 어린 소녀 안나를 구해내서 다행이라는 생각 뿐이다.
'왜?'가 없다. 왜 배경이 스페인이며, 왜 리포터는 쓸데없는 사견을 분출하며, 왜 시고니 위버는 나오다 말며, 왜 테러범(중 하나)의 동생은 인질로 잡혀있으며, 왜 시장의 경호원은 의문을 가지다 말며, 왜 테일러 역의 매튜 폭스(Matthew Fox)는 테러범의 일원이 되는 데도 모자라 잡힌 이후에 그 이유도 밝히지 않는 것일까.
용두사미라기보다는 장황설에 가까운 형편없는 영화가 나왔다. 안 그래도 헐리우드 영화, 극장에서 잘 안 보는데 요즘은 보는 것마다 이 모양인지 원. 블록버스터(이 영화는 블록버스터인가? 아마도 그런 것 같다)를 잘 보지 않는 이유는, 이처럼 후회할 가능성이 다른 경우보다 농후하기 때문이다. 예고편도 보지 않고 겨우 팜플릿만 봤거늘, 제대로 낚이고 말았다.
덧- 감독의 이름도 낯설고, 기억해야할 이유도 전혀 없다. 그래도 이름이 멋있으니 한번 써보기라도 하자. 피트 트래비스, 네 이놈.
